We just got back from a 7 day western Caribbean cruse with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line with 2 kids (boys ages 3 and 7). Everyone loved it!
Our ship was the Rhaposidy of the Seas. It's an older ship, but was very nice. It held about 4,500 passengers and it's max speed was about 22 knots.
Our first 2 days were at sea, then our first destination was in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We decided to get our own taxi vs. using the cruise line and it was much cheaper. For all four of us cost $10 (or that's the price I told the guy I would pay). The standard Taxi service was $4.50/pp or $18 for the same one-way trip.
We stopped at the Doctor's Beach and it was great. A chair rental was $5 and an umbrella was another $5. You can keep adding on additional items like a raft for another $5, etc. It was a great experience.
The kids loved Jamaica (at least the beach). Otherwise, Jamaica is very dirty and a nasty place to spend too much time.
My 7 year old and I saw a stingray and we all had fun looking for shells on the beach.
The next day we ended up at the Grand Cayman, but it rained ALL DAY. We took the Pirate Ship excursion and it sucked. I would NOT recommend the pirate ship excursion at all. My 7-yr old son was sitting next to me and asked when the fun was going to start. I felt soo bad because my wife and I hyped it up where he would be able to walk the plank and go swimming, etc. The tour sucked because not only did it rain the whole time, but the boat ran over a roap and it got caught in their prop, thus leaving us stranded for at least an hour. Ugh.
The third destination was Cozumel, Mexico. It was nice. We ended up renting a car and driving to an all inclusive beach and staying there. Had lots of fun.... I can't remember what the resort name is at the moment (might come back and edit this), but it was definitely well worth the $70 for 3 adults and 5 kids (relatives came with us).
Overall, I give Royal Caribbean **** (4 out of 5) stars.
