First of all most cruise lines don't offer single accommodations. So if you are going on a cruise you either pay a double rate to be in a cabin by yourself, or you find someone to go with you. Most cruise lines assign you and your guest to a table at some point after all of the reservations for the cruise date are set. Some cruise lines have tables for two and you can request one when you book, preferably, or after your reservation is final or when you get to the ship. They will give you a table for two (or one) if it is available. The Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers what they call freestyle cruising. This means you go to dinner whenever you want. So if you and your guest don't want to go together you can go seperate and either way ask for a table for one. On NCL if you want a table for one you have to be firm and just say no when they offer to seat you with someone else. The last time we cruised with them we asked for a table for two each day and each time they came back and said won't you share a table. SO be firm. The other option for dinner on all of the cruise ships is the optional dining. This means you go to a restaurant on ship other than the regular dining room; but you have to pay a fee or gratuity of $10 to $20 for the meal each time. They usually have a French Rsetaurant, a steak house and/or a suchi bar. Finally, all cruise ship have a serve yourself buffet option for meals so you go fix your plate and sit where you want; for all three meals.
