I would have to say time frame.
travel is a general term for going to another place.a journey is if the travel has some adventure into it.therefore, there can't be a boring journey.travel to school is not a journey.travel to the jungles of the amazon is a journey.a trip is the non-exciting travel.that's why you take the trip to school, trip back home, etc.excursion is a short travel perhaps because you just wanna do something.

Journey = planning or doing the thingTrip = Getting their (car, plane boat foot, etc)Travel = As in trip, but many of them.Excursion = getting out to do the thing.Either one, or any combination of them, with lots of money , will get you to enjoy putting your question to practise.

journey =implies long distance, with a hint of adventure, not casual.trip = short distance, could be casualto travel = to go from one place to anotherexcursion = a very brief trip off the main course for a special purpose. If you are taking a vacation up north, and your boss happens to live up there, you might take an excursion to go up and see her before you resume your vacation.
Journey : an act of travelling from one place to anotherTrip : a journey or excursionTravel : go from one place to another, especially over a long distanceExcursion : a short journey or trip taken for pleasureacording to me all are related but excursion & trip are small distance travelling while journey &travel are long
