Though quite often too fast for some sightseeing, rail is better if your interested in speed and not having to understand unfamiliar road signs and regulations. But be at the station a few minutes early; the rail system is EXACT and won't wait even a minute. Get Eurail Pass; your travel agent should be able to give you options on this, or on the internet.

Driving is crazy over there...but railways are often subject to strikes that can hinder travel..i would suggest a Eurail pass, then you can travel anywhere by train and if there is a strike, you could just go to another city for a day and then go to your preferred destination...However, those passes are expensive

If you are just interested in visiting major cities and attractions, I would suggest rail. If you want to stop off in smaller towns then it has to be done by road. Driving here is like anywhere in the world. Once you have got the hang of it, it becomes 2nd nature.England is a good place to start.:)

I live in East Europe (Romania) and my advise is to use trains then cars. The trains are not allways clean but are safe and... landscapes are great. Everything you can find on Romanian roads (also Bulgaria and Serbia): thin roads with drunk bikers, carts power by horses, deep holes on the road, noisy children, football players, caws, dogs, all kind of domestic birds and old ladies runing for them. All these can be a great challenge for a good driver.
