View Full Version : What are some good items to bring on European trip?
I am 18 and would love to go to Europe as soon as possible. I have never been overseas and have no idea what it's like. I am trying to get as much information as possible. Can someone give me a list of things to bring? Possibly someone who has been there and knows what to bring [and not to bring for that matter]? Thanks :]

I am European born: just bring what you would use here, too! Dress nicely, no exposed bellies, please! Wear sensible shoes: yes, not all pavement is smooth and even: cobblestones....Jeans are great with all kinds of tops....enjoy!!!!

1. Photocopies of your passport. If the original is lost or stolen, it will be easier to get a replacement.2. Same thing with credit cards - have a list of the card numbers, and phone numbers for the credit card complanies. And don't take the 800 number. It doesn't work from Europe. Get a regular number to call in an emergency. You should also call the credit card company before you leave to let them know that you will be in Europe so they won't unexpectedly block your card because they think it has been stolen.3. Check with your credit card company/bank before you leave about conversion/bank charges when you use your ATM or charge card overseas. You may be better off cashing travelers checks at a higher exchange rate than using a credit card or an ATM machine and finding out later that while the exchange rate was better, there were hidden fees on top of that which actually cost you more in the end.4. Bring a converter if you plan on charging a camera battery or using a hair dryer or any other American made electronics.5. Take along a good guide book with detailed maps so you can plan out what you want to see in advance, and know where to stay so that you can be in walking distance of as many sights as possible. Yes, centrally located hotels are more expensive, but walking is cheaper than mass transit, and who wants to be alone on a subway or a bus coming from the far side of town late at night.6. Read up in advance on local customs such as tipping, etc.7. Use the local subways and buses - they are much much much cheaper than cabs.8. Use the web to check what the temperatures should be while you're there, and then pack as lightly as you can - Most Europeans buy one or two outfits a season and then wear them every day so they always look in style, instead of buying several cheaper outfits that look it.9. Take a friend. It's simply safer.
