'In addition to shape, there also are no restrictions on the number of dimples a ball may have. And although there is no true standard, approximately 90 percent of all golf balls on the USGA Conforming Ball List fall in the 300- to 450-dimple range. More than that, says Tom Kennedy, Top-Flite's golf ball R&D chief, and you run the risk of too much drag.'A second source says, 'The number of dimples is either 336 for an American ball or 330 for a British ball.'

All modern golf balls have their own proprietary dimple designs. So there is no definitive answer to that question. Although obviously there is a limit to the number of dimples you can fit on a golf ball. I think Wilson used to make a ball they marketed as having the most dimples on any ball....I think it was 492.
