View Full Version : Any ideas on a family vacation in North Carolina besides just going to the beach?
My daughter is 20 months and we(my wife and I) are having trouble decided on a destination. Most of the theme parks(Tweetsie, Santa Land, etc.) are closed and we are having trouble coming up with ideas. Help!

Try Biltmore Mansion,Ashville, NC- it's beautiful there and it's also very close to Grandfather Mountain, Mount Mitchell(Highest peak East of Mississippi) and not too far from Cherokee and the Smokey Mountains

Stay down by Wilmington NC. There are tons of things to see and do. Fort Fisher, when this fort fell to the Union the Civil War was over two weeks later, The Marine Aquarium, Battleship North Carolina, and yes the ocean is there too. We went last summer, all 6 of us, and had a great time. Ferry Boats run out to Bald Head Island and it's a sight to see. Lighthouses, restaraunts, fishing piers, fresh seafood and we rented a house, right on the ocean, for $750.00 for an entire week. "Angel By The Sea" nice place and perfect for a family of your size. Check out Wilminton NC tourist web site they'll send you all kinds of free brochures and stuff for that area and also try North Carolina's state tourism site they'll send you stuff for the whole state. Good Luck!!!!!

If you are still considering a beach and want some place relaxing with plenty of things close by you may want to consider Holden Beach or one of the other Brunswick County beaches. If you would rather vacation inland than somewhere like Asheville out in the mountains is a beautiful place to see and visit.

I live in the north west mountains of NC... You should come here. It is beautiful. You can rent a house for a few days or a week and discover all the beauty the mountains have to offer. Drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, visit Boone and Blowing Rock (Definately go to Kilwins in Blowing Rock), Valle Crusis, You should definately see Linville Falls, Linville Caverns is cool, Grandfather Mountain, and if there is snow, there are lots of ski slopes in this area. There are tons of hiking trails on the Blue Ridge Parkway. If the weather is warmer when you go on vacation, you can go tubing or canoe the New River. (I recommend the South Fork of the New River along Railroad Grade Road in Todd/Fleetwood, NC b/c it runs parallel to a road for about 7 miles and has mostly shallow water. Visit www.appalachianadventures.com for more info on this.) You can go to www.StayinNorthCarolina.com to find a vacation rental in the mountains of NC. (This company is not a property management company, they just list the rentals for the owners and for the prop. mgt. companies.) I hope this helps, and have a good time on your vacation!!!
