...for 3-day side-trip by train? I've been to Munich and Prague. Interested a little in history, some time for historic walks, cathedrals, museums, but not too much. Always interested in good food, somewhat on budget but willing to splurge sometimes.

I'd reccomend Fairy-tale lane (The area where all the Brothers Grimm had all their fairy tales take place) Sababurg is cool, and Hameln even has a clock that shows the story of the pied piper and self-guided tour that goes through the path he probably used pointing out cool buildings and such.
