From my own experience..American hotels are way better than hotels in Europe..More comfortable and more conveniences..

European hotels tend to be more modest in what they provide. Do not assume you will have air conditioning....ASK FIRST! Rooms tend to be somewhat smaller. Food is generally quite good and in some places the pubs are excellent. A good rule of thumb is that most European hotels are different that hotels in USA and Canada by 1 star. That is to say that a 4 star hotel in (for example) London might be what you would expect from a 3 star in the USA or Canada. Hope this helps.Addendum: If you are a traveling American, Please...oh please...leave the attitude home. As an American, I have seen our fellow countrymen embarrass themselves and garner the sometimes deserved scorn of Europeans. Please remember the indoor voice, please/thank-you, and first and foremost, remember that you are a guest in their country and act as such.

Well, it's depending on where you are going in Europe.... Europe is not one big think that Americans seem to think. It is countries and they all have different standards and traditions..... I'm from Sweden and that is way different from for instance Spain or Poland. Americans are used to a different kind of standard. What is standard in Europe is another story in the US. I used to live in Paris. For me I was not surprised by the sometime "low" standard that Paris offered for housing. It was somewhat something charming with it, because it was a part of the whole neighborhood I lived in. An experience of the country I was living in.When it comes to food, Americans are used to a sugar culture & fat food. For me I still consider US food very unhealthy and feels so not fresh. You can find really nice and fresh food in Europe, that is way more healthy. It all depends on how open-minded you are.... Travel involves something different.... that's a part of the experience.... this whole question feels slightly odd.... why even bother to worry about it..... if you are afraid that you might not like the standard you can just be at home you know... Take it for what it is. Whatever country you are going to in Europe has way more culture and flavor that America has.

As far as the hotel experience goes to me it's not as nice as American hotels. But depending on how old you are you should really check out hostels. First off they're really cheap I usually paid about $15 US/night where as some hotels can get really pricey. www.backpackersworld.com is a good place to check out and you can get good feedback on the hostels. I say live the exprience the hotel thing you can do anywhere and plus you're in Europe.
